The horizontal pyramid was designed to help a child successfully "cross the midline," which is an important developmental skill necessary for reading and writing. Crossing the midline is when one hand unconsciously moves to the opposite side of the body to work there. Before this ability is developed, a child will tend to use the right hand on the right side of the body and the left hand on the left. This skill develops both hemispheres of the brain.
In addition to working on crossing the midline, this excellent educational material also helps develop hand-eye coordination and practice various finger grips and new wrist movements. The horizontal pyramid is introduced to children after they have mastered the vertical one. It introduces a completely new type of hand movement that is unfamiliar to the child but crucial for future manipulation of everyday objects and clothing.
Practice with different finger grasps and an experience/ test in crossing the mid line. Good teaching aids to teach children the ability of matching.
